Finally finished "brain droppings" by George Carlin.
Really nice insights put in a haphazard manner.
Of course, while speed reading through, I skipped over a couple of bits. Especially the vulgar language set for no point whatsoever. Except to vaguely appeal to the mindless few.
I've read commentary on his book. Really, I think people should sometimes skip over the talk about the wrapping something is presented in, but the substance itself.
Makes things all better.
If you can get the point, talk about it. Ascertain it. Digest it, and spread the idea if you agree. If not, think. After all that thinking is done, THEN proceed to harp on the grammar and style of the portrayal of the idea.
Well unless you can't get the point and you get nervous, trying to divert someone else's attention.
And always try to encourage someone when they're doing some thinking. Not much is happening in this world.
On the otherhand, I've noticed how people tend to have an opinion on everything except themselves.
"Man, I hate that guy." "Oh your music taste is so horrible" etc.
This kind of people tend to brush any serious conversation away, and give you the raised eyebrows when they don't get what you're saying.
Except when you're talking about them.
And hypothesizing about their behaviour.
The thing is, people are books. But not all books are great of course. There're those that should be dumped after one reading, there're those that stain you for life, there're those that bear re-reading.
I like those people who can't be re-read. They are the deep people who have been screwed up by life. More levels to their personality. Not a flat character.
And then there are those who amble about aimlessly not knowing what they are doing, because they're just some part-time actor lost on the huge set of life.
So when you start talking stuff like,"It's quite sad that you're not understood... While you're always acting happy, I'm sure you actually need...." or "your personality is ...." they will start responding pretty well.
And the rule is: If someone needs you to tell you what they are, the chance is they are quite screwed. You don't make friends with such a person (you could, just for laughs). Imagine if you got hacked by that person one day. And the person says "Oh geez I didn't know who I was for that moment. But really, I never did know myself".Well, try getting some control over the only thing ever remotely controllable in the universe. Your character.
However, I think it's okay for people to check what others think of him/her. To change for the better, and to mark out improvement. Not to make yourself feel good or salvage whatever is left of your ego. That being said, the purpose has to be clear. I like reading people, so I will read out their character to them. But I do not need them going "No, I'm actually like that...". I don't require you to corroborate evidence of your being and behavior with me. Do that privately. Differentiate between "I want your opinion" and "I want your opinion of me to be in line with my opinion of me". The latter means you really need a check on your mental well-being.
But one thing's great about reading others. You have enough material in any discourse, to act as a smokebomb from focus reaching yourself. People never get tired talking about themselves. Depends really. Unless you're talking to a fellow reader. Then there will be equal playing field. But such people are really rare. Especially in this self-important era where everyone has a say. An opinion to what? I really don't know.
People are books, meaning that even if covers are placed side by side, they don't really touch. What really bridges them and connects them are themes that reflect the human condition. And this kind of writing is done via empathy. Empathising with the general mankind. But mankind generally do not empathise with their own kind. Weird. The idea is "my suffering is more than yours". Well stop the quantifying. Keep them to yourself if you can't stop the thought from coming through. Feel for someone else first. Then help. Then walk off (silently).
That's all I have for now.
I've to go busy myself with homework again. After feeling sick for a day.
