Compilation of quotes by Lee Kuan Yew seen at my community's tribute site a few days ago. Really respect all the personnel and those people who remain unfazed by the heavy rain just to send him off on his final journey.
My generation has definitely taken many things for granted. I did not experience the kampong life my mother spoke of, the snakes she had to catch and of the general atmosphere of insecurity. We were born in an era of proper sanitation and housing.
Meritocracy. A multi-racial society. These are phrases we have long recited, yet we may or may not understand the delicate nature of such an ideal he pursued and sought to preserve. My primary school classmates would recall one relief teacher who had sworn she would burn all the chinese alive just like how we burn offerings and dirty the streets during our observance of the seventh month. Her bloodshot eyes of hatred and disgust is what I would recall for life, but I am glad I haven't had to see such a sight again, or worse still, experience a racial riot. What was heartening then was how my classmates had spoken against her racist views, and our belief in a society free from racial prejudices. Eventually we managed to have her replaced within a few days.
His emphasis on education has thus not gone unreciprocated. And I strongly believe, the solid mark of a man's achievements is when the next generation is able to differentiate right from wrong, and continue the ideals of equality he has set out to instill in our system.
As we pass the mourning phase, we have to consider the future. Especially so for people of my age who are now choosing their course in life. The weight of our choice in contributing to Singapore in our capacity, is undeniably more pertinent now.
However taunting it may seem, it is the responsibility of each and every citizen to continue the Singapore story in their own way. To do so would be the greatest honour to his life's work. And eventually, our generation of youth would have to take the helm and steer Singapore to greater heights.
May you now rest in peace, Mr Lee.
